THE BOOK OF BOOKS ON PHOTOBOOKS - Daniel Blaize, Anatole Desachy, Jean-Marie Donat
30,00 €

For a long time, the photography book remained in the shadow of photography itself, relegated to a purely documentary and illustrative role. But thanks to recent work by historians such as Gerry Badger, Horacio Fernandez, and Hans-Michael Koetzle, by specialized booksellers like Denis Ozanne and Harper Levine, and with the support of major collectors such as Manfred Heiting, Martin Parr, and Alain Sinibaldi, exhibitions and bibliographies have emerged to disseminate the history of this medium and educate the public on the subject. A market has emerged, price ranges have been established, and today, the photography book has gained its independence and become an essential component of photography under the now well-established Anglo-Saxon term “PHOTOBOOK.”

After sparking unprecedented enthusiasm some twenty years ago, the market has now stabilized, but there are still many publishing houses—including a multitude of small independent publishers—and publications remain plentiful. Following the development of this market and the growing interest from the public, collectors, and institutions, the need for compilation became apparent, leading to comprehensive collections such as those by Parr & Badger, or collections dedicated to specific fields: geographic regions (Latin America, Japan, the Netherlands...), photographers (Nobuyoshi Araki, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Richard Prince), and themes (Nude, Business, Photojournalism).

Published to coincide with the “Books on Photobooks” selection at the L'INAPERCU photography bookstore, this volume—which lists 87 titles—is a compilation of books about photography books published around the world. For each title, it provides a cover image, a double-page spread, and a bibliographic note. More than just a reference work, this book is a tribute to the phenomenon that photography books have become and a recognition of the important role played by the printed image—the book that one opens and leafs through—in the digital age.

The final volume in William Klein’s series on cities, following *New York* (1956), *Rome* (1956), and *Moscow* (1961). The book was reissued in 2014, 50 years after the first edition. The cover was designed by Klein himself, while the original layout was retained. The photography is superb, capturing the full essence of Tokyo in 1961—a period of rapid economic growth and the city’s buzz three years before the Tokyo Olympics.

SOCIAL GRACES - Larry Fink
135,00 €

In his seminal series *Social Graces*, Fink explored the contrasting worlds of Manhattan’s chic residents and rural Pennsylvanians in the late 1970s. “Some people mistake my work for satire. I don’t object to that, because satire is a powerful force, and if my work is perceived that way, it serves a purpose,” he explains. “But I don’t agree. These photos were taken with the intention of finding myself in the other, or finding the other in myself.”

WALKER EVANS, THE MAGAZINE WORK - David Campany
48,00 €

Walker Evans was one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century, producing a body of work that continues to shape our understanding of the modern era. He worked in every genre and format, in black-and-white and color, but two passions remained constant: literature and the printed page.

While his photo books are among the most significant in the history of photography, Evans’s more ephemeral works remain largely unknown. In small avant-garde publications and mainstream titles such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum, Life, and Fortune, he produced innovative and independent journalism, often setting his own assignments and editing, writing, and designing his own pages. Presenting many of his photographic essays in their entirety, Walker Evans: The Magazine Work brings together the untold story of this work, allowing us to see how he protected his autonomy, earned a living, and found an audience far beyond the museum and the gallery.

TULSA - Larry Clark TULSA - Larry Clark

TULSA - Larry Clark
180,00 €

When it was first published in 1971, Larry Clark’s groundbreaking book *Tulsa* immediately sparked controversy across the country. Its explicit depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse within Oklahoma’s youth culture were hailed by critics for debunking the myth that the American heartland had remained untouched by the social upheavals that shook the United States in the 1960s. The raw and haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture gradually overwhelmed by self-destruction—and are as moving and unsettling today as they were when first published. Originally published as a limited paperback edition, then reissued in 1983 as a limited hardcover edition at the author’s request, this book sells for over a thousand dollars at rare book dealers. Now available in hardcover and paperback from Grove Press, this seminal work of photographic art and social history is once again accessible to the general public.

THE BOOK OF 101 BOOKS - Andrew Roth
180,00 €

The Book of 101 Books is published by Andrew Roth and features over 500 color plates accompanied by essays by eight renowned authors: Vince Aletti, Richard Benson, May Castleberry, Jeffrey Fraenkel, Daid Moriyama, Shelley Rice, David Levi Strauss, and Neville Wakefield.

In her insightful 15,000-word essay titled “When Objects Dream,” art historian Shelley Rice traces the history of 20th-century photography through the book. Richard Benson, dean of the School of the Arts at Yale University and an internationally renowned expert on photographic printing, traces the evolution of the art of printing from photogravure to new digital technologies in his 5,000-word essay titled “Photography in Print.” May Castleberry, an independent curator and editor for the Library Council of the Museum of Modern Art, describes the production process behind the reprint of Steichen’s classic children’s book, *The First Picture Book*, and discusses the challenge of presenting photography books within a museum exhibition in her essay “The Presence of The Past.” Jeffrey Fraenkel, art dealer and book publisher, offers a personal account of the many pitfalls of book publishing in his essay “A Choice of Titles.” Contemporary Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama recounts in his essay “Reflections” the creation of his avant-garde publication Bye, Bye Photography, Dear (1972). Neville Wakefield, art critic, theorist, and curator of contemporary art, analyzes Richard Prince’s radical picture book *Adult Comedy Action Drama* (1995) in “Stand Up Comedy and the Horizontal Sublime.” Vince Aletti, arts editor at the Village Voice, and David Levi Strauss, art critic and professor, each write an insightful essay of 300 to 500 words to accompany the 101 books.
