THE BOOK OF BOOKS ON PHOTOBOOKS - Daniel Blaize, Anatole Desachy, Jean-Marie Donat
30,00 €

Photobooks have long remained in the shadow of photography, relegated to a documentary and illustrative function. But thanks to the recent work of historians such as Gerry Badger, Horacio Fernandez and Hans-Michael Koetzle, specialized booksellers such as Denis Ozanne and Harper Levine, and with the support of major collectors such as Manfred Heiting, Martin Parr and Alain Sinibaldi, exhibitions and bibliographies have emerged to disseminate the history of this medium and enlighten the public on the subject. A market was created, price brackets established and today, the photography book has gained its independence and become an essential component of photography under the now well-established Anglo-Saxon term PHOTOBOOK.

After an unprecedented craze some twenty years ago, the market has now stabilized, but publishing houses, with a multitude of small independent publishers, remain numerous and publications are still plentiful. With the development of this market and the growing interest of the public, collectors and institutions, the need for compilation has been felt, leading to collections with a universal vocation such as those of Parr & Badger, or collections devoted to specific fields: geographical areas (Latin America, Japan, the Netherlands...), photographers (Nobuyoshi Araki, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Richard Prince), themes (Nude, Enterprise, Photojournalism).

Published on the occasion of the "Books on Photobooks" selection at the photographic bookshop L'INAPERCU, this work, which lists 87 titles, is a compilation of books on photography published worldwide. For each title, it provides an image of the cover, a double-page spread and a bibliographical note. More than a reference work, this book is a tribute to the phenomenon that photography books have become, and an acknowledgement of the important role played by the printed image, the book we open and leaf through, in the age of the all-digital world.

The cover was designed by Klein himself, while the original edition has been retained. The camera work is superb, capturing the whole image of Tokyo in 1961, a period of rapid economic growth and the effervescence of the city three years before the Tokyo Olympics.

SOCIAL GRACES - Larry Fink
135,00 €

In his landmark series Social Graces, Fink explored the contrasting worlds of upscale Manhattanites and rural Pennsylvania townsfolk in the late 1970s. "Some people confuse my work with satire. I don't object, because satire is a powerful force, and if my work is perceived that way, it serves a function," he explains. "But I don't agree. These photos were taken in the spirit of finding myself in the other, or finding the other in myself."

WALKER EVANS, THE MAGAZINE WORK - David Campany
48,00 €

Walker Evans was one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century, producing a body of photographs that continues to shape our understanding of the modern era. He worked in all genres and formats, in black and white and color, but two passions remained constant: literature and the printed page.

While his photographic books are among the most important in the history of photography, Evans' more ephemeral pages remain largely unknown. In small avant-garde publications and mainstream titles such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum, Life and Fortune, he produced innovative, independent journalism, often setting his own assignments, editing, writing and designing his pages. Presenting many of his photographic essays in their entirety, Walker Evans: The Magazine Work brings together the unwritten history of this work, allowing us to see how he protected his autonomy, made a living and found an audience far beyond the museum and gallery.

TULSA - Larry Clark TULSA - Larry Clark

TULSA - Larry Clark
180,00 €

When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book Tulsa immediately sparked controversy across the country. His explicit depictions of sex, violence and drug abuse in Oklahoma youth culture were hailed by critics for exposing the myth that middle America had remained aloof from the social upheavals that rocked the U.S. in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968 and 1971 document a youth culture gradually submerged in self-destruction - and are as moving and disturbing today as they were when first published. Originally published in a limited paperback edition, then reissued in 1983 in a limited hardcover edition at the author's request, this book is sold for over a thousand dollars by rare book dealers. Now available in hardcover and paperback from Grove Press, this seminal work of photographic art and social history is once again accessible to the general public.

THE BOOK OF 101 BOOKS - Andrew Roth
180,00 €

The 101 Books is edited by Andrew Roth and includes over 500 full-color plates with essays by eight renowned authors: Vince Aletti, Richard Benson, May Castleberry, Jeffrey Fraenkel, Daid Moriyama, Shelley Rice, David Levi Strauss and Neville Wakefield.

Art historian Shelley Rice, in her illuminating 15,000-word essay "When Objects Dream", reviews the history of twentieth-century photography through the book. Richard Benson, Dean of the School of the Arts at Yale University and internationally renowned expert on photographic printing, follows the evolution of the art of printing from photogravure to new digital technologies in his 5,000-word essay "Photography in Print". May Castleberry, independent curator and editor for the Library Council of the Museum of Modern Art, describes the production process for the reprint of Steichen's classic children's book, The First Picture Book, and discusses the challenge of presenting photographic books in a museum exhibition in her essay "The Presence of The Past". Art dealer and book publisher Jeffrey Fraenkel offers a personal account of the many pitfalls of book publishing in his essay "A Choice of Titles". Contemporary Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama recounts the construction of his avant-garde publication Bye, Bye Photography, Dear (1972) in his essay "Reflections". Neville Wakefield, art critic, theorist and curator of contemporary art, analyzes Richard Prince's radical picture book Adult Comedy Action Drama (1995) in "Stand Up Comedy and the Horizontal Sublime". Vince Aletti, art editor at the Village Voice, and David Levi Strauss, art critic and teacher, each write an insightful 300-500 word essay to accompany the 101 books.
