THE COMPLETE UNTITLED FILM STILLS - Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, a series of black-and-white photographs made between 1977 and 1980, is today considered one of the most original and influential achievements in the recent history of phooygraphy. Witty, provocative and searching, this lively catalog of female roles inspired by movie characters touches a vital nerve in our culture, and marks the first time this entire series has been published as a unified work. On something great, Sherman tried out other characters in other roles: the chic starlet at her seaside hideaway, the lush librarian, the domestic sex kitten or the hot-blooded woman of the people. She finally finished the series in 1980. For her, pop-culture imagery was not a subject or raw material, but an entire artistic vocabulary, ready for use. The 69 solitary heroines thus represent a particular constellation of fictional femininity that took root in post-war America - the period of Sherman's youth and the starting point of our contemporary mythology.

Exhibition catalog " Cindy Sherman: The Complete Untitled Film Stills", organized from June 26 to September 2, 1997 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
