PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS FROM LATIN AMERICA - André Frère Éditions, 2012
Recognition of the importance of photo books in the history of photography and art is a recent phenomenon. A number of exhibitions and publications have contributed to this international appreciation. Among the first are "Fotografía Pública / Photography in Print 1919-1939" at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid, 1999) and "Open Book from 1978 to the Present" at the Hasselblad Center (Goteborg, 2005), as well as the two-volume The History of Photobooks by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (Phaidon, 2004 and 2006).
A few Latin American photo books are referenced here, but in reality they are few and far between. This may be explained by the absence of monographs and exhibitions on the subject. However, Latin American photobooks have a long and remarkable history, dating back to the 1930s and involving many of the most important photographers, such as the Mexicans Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Agustin Jimenez, Emilio Amero, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Guillermo Kahlo, Agustin Casasola, Nacho Lopez, Enrique Bostelmann, Pedro Meyer and Graciela Iturbide, as well as Martin Chambi (Peru), Horacio Coppola, Grete Stern, Gustavo Thorlichen, Marcos Lopez, Sara Facio-Alicia d'Amico (Argentina), Sergio Larrain (Chile), Alfredo Boulton, Barbara Brandli, Fina Gomez, Daniel Gonzalez, Paolo Gasparini, Claudio perna, Thea Segall (Venezuela), Hernan Diaz, Nereo Lopez (Colombia), Mayito, Ernesto Fernandez and Ivan Canas (Cuba).
Excellent photo books by Claudia Andujar, Maureen Bisilliat, Stefania Bril, Mario Cravo Neto, Marcel Gautherot, George Love, Jean Manzon, Miguel Rio Branco, Peter Scheier, Dulce Soares, Otto Stupakoff y Bob Wolfeson, among others, have been published in Brazil.
Le Livre de photographies d'Amérique Latine offers a fascinating pictorial tour of the titles that make up the history of photography.
The texts are by Horacio Fernández, a specialist in the field.
