PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS FROM LATIN AMERICA - André Frère Éditions, 2012

59,00 €

Recognition of the importance of photography books in the history of photography and art is a recent phenomenon. Certain exhibitions and publications have contributed to this international appreciation. Among the earliest were “Fotografía Pública / Photography in Print 1919–1939” at the Reina Sofia National Art Museum (Madrid, 1999) and “Open Book from 1978 to the Present” at the Hasselblad Center (Gothenburg, 2005), as well as the two-volume work The History of Photobooks by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (Phaidon, 2004 and 2006).

A few Latin American photo books are listed there, but in reality there are very few. This can be explained by the lack of monographs and exhibitions on this subject. However, Latin American photo books have a long and remarkable history, which also dates back to the 1930s and has featured many of the most important photographers, such as the Mexicans Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Agustin Jimenez, Emilio Amero, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Guillermo Kahlo, Agustin Casasola, Nacho Lopez, Enrique Bostelmann, Pedro Meyer, and Graciela Iturbide, as well as Martin Chambi (Peru), Horacio Coppola, Grete Stern, Gustavo Thorlichen, Marcos Lopez, Sara Facio-Alicia d’Amico (Argentina), Sergio Larrain (Chile), Alfredo Boulton, Barbara Brandli, Fina Gomez, Daniel Gonzalez, Paolo Gasparini, Claudio Perna, Thea Segall (Venezuela), Hernan Diaz, Nereo Lopez (Colombia), Mayito, Ernesto Fernandez, and Ivan Canas (Cuba).

Excellent photography books by Claudia Andujar, Maureen Bisilliat, Stefania Bril, Mario Cravo Neto, Marcel Gautherot, George Love, Jean Manzon, Miguel Rio Branco, Peter Scheier, Dulce Soares, Otto Stupakoff, and Bob Wolfeson, among others, have been published in Brazil.

The Book of Latin American Photography offers a fascinating visual overview of the works that have shaped the history of photography.

The texts are by Horacio Fernández, a specialist in the field.
