SASUKE - Masahisa Fukase

A world-renowned Japanese photographer, best known for his seminal book *The Solitude of Ravens* (1986), Masahisa Fukase turned his lens in 1977 toward his new companion: his cat Sasuke.

Surrounded by cats since childhood, Fukase decided, with the arrival of this new kitten, to make it a subject of his photography in its own right. He takes it everywhere with him and, in a long-term, almost experimental process, explores a new approach: "That year, I took a lot of photos while crawling on my stomach to be at a cat’s eye level, and in a way, that turned me into a cat. It was a joyful process, taking these photos while playing with what appealed to me, in harmony with the changes of nature. " The cat, a faithful companion who never leaves his side, takes the place of his wife, an eternal heartbreak, also represented by the iconic fleeing crows. This book concludes the series of publications dedicated to his cats, which began in 2015 with *Wonderful Days* (Roshin Books, Japan).
