SOUTH AMERICAN MODERNISM - Sun/Sun, Albert Kahn Museum
An original art book that reflects the themes of the exhibition catalogue, this volume consists of a documentary section—a research notebook compiling all the texts and cartographic materials—and a portfolio—a travel journal—that offers an iconographic and chronological narrative of Albert Kahn’s 1909 journey through Brazil and Argentina, enriched with captions.
The photo essay— "The Journey "—chronicles the philanthropic banker’s transatlantic voyage, from the avenues of Buenos Aires to the seaside district of Rio de Janeiro. A veritable photographic archive, these images bear witness to an era: life aboard crowded ocean liners and the conditions of emigration in the early20th century, urban centers with architecture inspired by European capitals, flourishing economic exchanges, or simply everyday life.
The accompanying booklet— *The Investigation* —complements and documents the selection of Autochromes and stereoscopic plates featured in the travel journal. It invites readers to follow the research conducted by a group of archivists, historians, curators, and photography specialists as they work to identify and better understand the context in which these photographs were created. In this booklet, which blends historical perspectives with image analysis, readers are also invited to investigate and set out in search of these young South American nations.
