SOUTH AMERICAN MODERNITIES - Sun/Sun, Musée Albert Kahn
An original book-object reflecting the intentions of the exhibition-dossier, the book is composed of a documentary notebook, an investigation notebook bringing together all the texts and cartographic elements, and a portfolio, a travel notebook, offering an iconographic and chronological account of Albert Kahn's 1909 trip to Brazil and Argentina, nourished by legends.
The images section - the voyage - retraces the philanthropic banker's transatlantic journey, from the avenues of Buenos Aires to the seaside district of Rio de Janeiro. A true photographic archive, these images bear witness to an era: life aboard crowded liners and the conditions of emigration in the early 20th century, urban centers with architecture inspired by European capitals, flourishing economic exchanges and, more simply, everyday life.
The text book - l'enquête - accompanies and documents the selection of autochromes and stereoscopic plates in the travel book. It allows readers to follow the investigation carried out by a group of documentalists, historians, collection and exhibition managers and photography specialists, in order to identify and better understand the context in which the photographs were created. In this booklet, combining historical perspectives and image analysis, the reader is also invited to investigate and set off in search of these young South American nations.
