“I found some photos of his childhood in the barn in Loone—pictures of him as a little boy playing in the river with his brother.
After graduating from high school, he wanted to travel, to see the world. He went to Latin America, to Peru. He met his wife, with whom he returned to France.
In search of a better life, he settled in Couserans 40 years ago.

Her story, like that of everyone I’ve met, shows me that this region is a corner of France that has been shaped by travel. The Crusades of the Middle Ages, the crossings to Spain, the Spaniards who came to France, those who settled here in search of freedom, and those who were born here and grew up in these valleys.
We arrived from Chile, a country situated at the edge of the world.
When you arrive in Chile, it’s a dead end. You have to stay or head back the other way. Just like in the Couserans, as you climb into the valleys, the roads are dead ends. Once you face the mountains, you have to stay or turn back.
“I grew up in France after my parents went into exile, so my inner world is nourished by two cultures: the French and the Chilean.”
