ROBERT FRANK IN AMERICA - Robert Frank

Out of print

It was because of the impact of Robert Frank’s *The Americans*, published in France in 1958, and because he gave up photography shortly thereafter to pursue filmmaking—in the same year, 1959, that the book appeared in the United States—because of the considerable influence it had on generations of photographers, and also, and above all, because a large part of his work from the 1950s remains little known. This book, featuring Robert Frank’s photographs from the collection of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, is the first to focus on this work, with 131 prints, including 22 originals from *The Americans*, and, above all, more than 100 previously unseen images. It explores the major themes dear to the photographer and, above all, his photography, which is both objective and deeply personal.

Galassi’s essay offers a comprehensive reexamination of Robert Frank’s early career as a photographer and examines in detail how he utilizes the full range of the essential vocabulary of mm.
