ROBERT FRANK IN AMERICA - Robert Frank
It's because of the importance of Robert Frank's The Americans, released in France in 1958, because of the fact that he stopped photography just afterwards for the cinema - the same year, 1959, that the book appeared in the USA - because of the considerable influence he had on generations of photographers, and also and above all because much of his work from the 1950s remains little known. This book, with photographs by Robert Frank from the collection of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, is the first to focus on this work, with 131 prints, including 22 American originals, and more than 100 unknown images. All the major themes dear to the photographer are represented, as well as his photography, which is both objective and highly personal.
Galassi's text presents a comprehensive re-examination of Robert Frank's early photographic career, examining in detail how he used the full range of the 35mm camera's essential vocabulary.
