THE AMERICANS - Robert Frank
First published in France in French by Robert Delpire in 1958 and then the following year in the United States, *The Americans* by photographer Robert Frank (1924–2019) was reprinted by Steidl in 2008. A true classic in the history of photography, this volume—with an introduction by Jack Kerouac—features 83 photographs selected from the 23,000 that Frank took during his year-and-a-half-long journey across the United States. More of an ode or a poem than a literal document, the book is as powerful and provocative today as it was fifty-six years ago.
In the 2013 film *Robert Frank: America Through the Lens*, directed by Laura Israël, he says: “When I look at the 83 photos I chose for the book, I tell myself that I’ve captured the essence.”
