ULTIMO SUR - Rodrigo Gómez Rovira
Ultimo Sur takes readers on a journey to the other side of the world, blending photographs by Rodrigo Gómez Rovira with those of his grandfather, who settled with his family in Tierra del Fuego in 1938 following the major agrarian reform in Chile. Forty years later, the next generation went into exile in France to escape the dictatorship. It wasn’t until the 1990s that photographer Rodrigo Gómez Rovira decided to return to Chile, in search of his roots and his family’s history.
Ultimo Sur is a hybrid book that combines, in a single volume, the family album created by the author’s grandfather and his own photographs of this vast, magnificent, and isolated region, which leave room for the imagination. It offers a glimpse into a hard-working agricultural community and the difficult lives of the herders. The portraits, witnesses to a forgotten era, slip in between scenes of daily life and the wild landscapes that stretch between the mountains and the ocean.
