PHOTOBOOK AWARD 2011 - Dieter Neubert (Kassel)
This is a catalog of the 33 books shortlisted by the 2011 Kassel Photographic Book Festival. The prize considers 33 books as the most outstanding photo books of the previous year by a jury of renowned photography experts from all over the world. Each expert nominated his or her favorite book and justified it in a short statement. There is no single winner, but all nominated books are recognized on an equal footing. This selection of photo books illustrates the evolution of the medium: from the simple self-published experimental booklet to the substantial and wonderful traditionally produced books, to the exclusive and strictly limited boxed set of six books, available by subscription only. The books selected reflect the cultural trends of the time - a desire for autonomy and self-determination, the urge to communicate personal experiences and important events, and the desire for preservation and perfection.
