WORLDVIEW - Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed (1929–2006) was a rather taciturn man, with a clear preference for the language of images over that of words. Nevertheless, his worldview was as complex as that of any author who expresses himself in prose. Human beings and the social structures they create and destroy were one of the major themes of his worldview, his Weltanschauung. A philosophical approach like his posed political problems; it was ethically committed and required a rigorous method. It was a particularly demanding endeavor that required a lifetime devoted to photography, a long-term commitment, determination, and a constant re-examination of his own identity. Freed is often classified as a “press photographer” or “photojournalist.”
