WORLDVIEW - Leonard Freed

Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was a rather taciturn person, with a clear preference for the language of images over that of words. Nevertheless, his conception of the world was as complex as that of any writer who expresses himself in prose. Human beings and the social structures they create and destroy represented one of the major themes of his worldview, his Weltanschauung. A philosophical approach such as his posed political problems, was ethically committed and implied a rigorous method. It was a particularly demanding approach, requiring a lifetime's dedication to photography, hard work, determination and a continual questioning of one's own personality. Freed is often categorized as a "press photographer" or "photojournalist".
