One was a renowned artist and pioneering photographer; the other, a passionate photography collector, curator, and author—known to his many friends as “Mr. Photokina” for having founded and organized the legendary exhibitions at the Photokina photography fair in Cologne. Man Ray (1890–1976) and L. Fritz Gruber (1908–2005) maintained a professional and personal friendship for over 20 years, enjoying that special closeness that can sometimes develop between an artist and a connoisseur. Gruber was closely involved in projects such as Man Ray’s solo exhibition at Photokina and the book *Man Ray Portraits*, one of the many photography books Gruber edited that are now sought after by collectors.
Drawing on their in-depth knowledge of Man Ray’s work, Gruber and his wife Renate spent several decades assembling the collection that forms the basis of this book. (In addition to Man Ray’s photographs, sculptures, and objects, the book includes an extensive collection of correspondence between Man Ray and Gruber, as well as several essays on their partnership. Against this broad backdrop emerges a moving personal portrait of the Grubers’ tireless dedication to the work of this American artist. This volume offers a wealth of new insights into Man Ray, particularly regarding the final creative phase of his life.
