Zine Series No.39 Tragedy - Polly Brown
Modern life is peppered with moments of melodrama. Tragedy is a zine by artist Polly Brown, created to highlight our relationship with emotional performance. In this series of tragicomic portraits, the artist invites ten actors to cry on command. Bright tears and silent, strangled sobs ensue. Falling somewhere between the aesthetics of Internet stock imagery and the actors' headshots, the series poses the question: is there anything to be gained from forcing tears?
Polly Brown is a British artist who works primarily with photography and film. Her work often takes a fresh look at familiar scenes and objects, subverting our expectations of what they are or do with her wry sense of humor and playful perspective. Sensitive, subversive and sometimes illicit, she is interested in limited spaces, from hotel rooms to airports, from art galleries to vacation resorts. Polly lives and works in London.
