*Die Traumadetung* was * *, published in 2016 to mark the fourth edition of the “Miradas de Asturias” project by the Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, a patronage initiative aimed at creating and promoting a collection of photographic works inspired by the Principality of Asturias and its inhabitants, an agricultural autonomous community in northwestern Spain. Artists Alberto García Alix, Ouka Leele, and José Manuel Ballester also participated in this collective artistic project.

In this book, photographer Joan Fontcuberta (1954-) explores the concept of “sick” images—images afflicted by a form of deterioration or pathology that disrupts their documentary function and prevents them from continuing to live on in archives, despite their extraordinary visual uniqueness. This work was created using images from various photo libraries in Asturias. Drawing inspiration from Freud’s work on the interpretation of dreams (Die Traumdeutung in German) and the realities of inner mental life, Fontcuberta transforms the dream here into trauma, where another aesthetic, dreamlike, or conceptual dimension emerges.

Published by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, 2016.
