AN ATLAS OF WAR AND TOURISM IN THE CAUCASUS - The Sochi Project
Rob Hornstra and Arnold van Bruggen have been working together since 2009 to tell the story of Sochi, Russia, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. They have returned to the region several times as committed practitioners of “slow journalism,” establishing a solid foundation of research and engagement with this small yet incredibly complex place before it found itself in the glare of international media attention. This book thus focuses on evocative visual narratives of a place where beach tourism coexists with terrorism, corruption, and poverty.
Hornstra’s photographic approach combines the best of documentary storytelling with contemporary portraits, found photographs, and other visual elements gathered during their travels. Since the beginning of their collaboration, the Sochi Project has been published in installments, both in book form and online, each focusing on a particular aspect of the region’s history, geography, people, and their stories.
