EVENTS ASHORE - An-My Lê
“This work reflects both my perspective and my personal history as a political refugee from Vietnam, as well as the broader geopolitical forces and conflicts that shape these landscapes.”
Photographer An-My Lê (b. 1960) was a teenager when her family was evacuated from Vietnam aboard a U.S. military plane in 1975. She began her career in photography at Stanford University in California and regards this artistic medium as a “passport to the world.” Over time, she developed a photographic practice that is both personal and civic, and with “Events Ashore,” she established a reputation as a master of color, masterfully manipulating not only color palettes but also kaleidoscopic shifts. This project began when the artist was invited to photograph U.S. Navy ships preparing for deployment to Iraq, the first of many such trips. These assignments allowed her to closely study the military’s non-combat activities, and through this photographic series, she was able to craft a truly unique and intimate visual narrative of the U.S. Navy.
