TEMPORA MORTE - Lia Darjes
During a residency in Kaliningrad (formerly East Prussia), Lia Darjes discovered the small, makeshift market stalls lining the roadsides of this neglected region, largely cut off from the development of modern Europe. At the simplest of these makeshift stalls, elderly women offer what they have gathered by hand from nearby gardens, fields, and forests to supplement their meager pensions. The images are enhanced by the aura of simplicity and minimalism in the way the goods are displayed on the ground, on wooden crates, newspapers, or simple camping tables. Lia Darje’s photos capture what is on offer in a classic, almost timeless style: potatoes, apples, berries, flowers, garlic bulbs, homemade marmalade, and, more rarely, a piece of meat; a few portraits of the street vendors round out her still lifes.
