ASHORE EVENTS - An-My Lê
"This work is as much about my perspective and personal history as a political refugee from Vietnam as it is about the vast geopolitical forces and conflicts that shape these landscapes."
Photographer An-My Lê (1960-) was a teenager when her family was evacuated from Vietnam aboard an American military plane in 1975. She took up photography at Stanford University in California, regarding the medium as a "passport to the world". Over time, she developed a photographic enterprise that was both personal and civic-minded, and with "Events Ashore" she forged a reputation as a master colorist, playing with color palettes and kaleidoscopic changes to perfection. The project began when the artist was invited to photograph US Navy ships preparing for deployment to Iraq, the first of many voyages. These allowed her to study the army's non-military activities up close, and with this photographic ensemble she was able to write a truly singular and confidential visual narrative of the US Navy.
