CARNIVAL STRIPPERS - Susan Meiselas
From 1972 to 1975, Susan Meiselas (b. 1948), an American photojournalist and one of the few women members of the Magnum agency, spent her summers alongside fairground strippers in small towns in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Armed with nothing more than a Leica without a flash, she photographed these women at work, shedding light on the power dynamics inherent in “female performances” viewed through the dual lens of portraiture and reportage. “They aren’t just naked bodies,” she says, “but real women with personal stories.” Now a legendary work, *Carnival Strippers* has influenced generations of photographers.
