CARNIVAL STRIPPERS - Susan Meiselas
From 1972 to 1975, Susan Meiselas (1948-), American photojournalist and rare female member of the Magnum agency, spent her summers working alongside fairground strippers in small towns in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Equipped with a simple Leica and no flash, she photographed these women at work, illuminating the power dynamics inherent in "female spectacles" viewed from the dual perspective of portraiture and reportage. "These are not just naked bodies," she says, "but real women with a personal history." A mythical work, Carnival Strippers has influenced generations of photographers.
