CIRCUS - Bruce Davidson
"Circus" presents a powerful series of photographs, beautifully printed by Steidl. Bruce Davidson’s immersive work captures a world set apart from the outside world by the interplay of exhibitionism and voyeurism, revealing a kind of resilience in those who provoke reactions from the public, whether they are performing or not. However, as the collection is somewhat uneven, the editing, in my opinion, could have been tighter. While we sense the photographer’s deep attachment to Jimmy Armstrong, the “Little Man,” who allowed Bruce Davidson to “release” one of his most powerful series, his later photographs reveal a greater distance on his part… and thus on ours. Despite everything, “Circus” is a compelling book!
