CIRCUS - Bruce Davidson
"Circus" presents a series of powerful photographs, beautifully printed by the Steidl publishing house. Bruce Davidson's immersive work testifies to a universe separated from the outside world by the game of exhibition and voyeurism, a quasi-resilience of those who provoke the public's reactions, whether they are performing or not. However, as the whole is rather uneven, the editing, in my opinion, would have deserved to be tighter. While we sense the photographer's deep attachment to Jimmy Armstrong, the "Little Man" who enabled Bruce Davidson to "release" one of his strongest series, his later shots show more distance from him... and therefore from us. Nevertheless, "Circus" is a compelling book!
