Dear Deer - Yoko Ishii
Wild deer inhabit the urban centers of Nara and Miyajima in Japan. Long revered at Nara’s Kasuga Shrine, the animals have been designated as a national treasure and are protected. The local government of Miyajima, however, has banned feeding the deer in order to keep them away from human settlements. Nevertheless, some compassionate people continue to feed the deer, which face a food shortage due to population growth. Car accidents caused by the animals have also increased, exacerbating this serious problem. In her series of photographs, Yoko Ishii captures the freedom the deer have to cross the boundaries between humans and nature.
