Dear Deer - Yoko Ishii
Wild deer inhabit the urban centers of Nara and Miyajima in Japan. Long venerated at the Naras Kasuga Shrine, the animals have been designated a national treasure and are protected. The local government of Miyajima, however, has banned feeding the deer in order to separate them from human habitation. Yet some sympathetic people continue to feed the deer, which are facing a food shortage due to population growth. Car accidents caused by the animals have also increased, compounding this serious problem. In her series of photographs, Yoko Ishii shows the deer's freedom to transgress the boundaries between man and nature.
