Exquisite Corpse - Luke Stephenson & Jaap Stephenson

Exquisite Corpse is a game in which each person takes turns drawing or writing on a piece of paper before folding it to cover their contribution, then handing it to the next collaborator to complete their addition. The game became popular in the 1920s, when it was used by artists of the Surrealist movement to create collaborative compositions.

Inspired by this method, Jaap and Luke set about creating their own photographic surrealist game using their body parts (body, legs, head and feet) while inventing obscure titles for the evolving characters.

Originally, the two photographers had planned to work together on this project in real life, but Covid 19 had other ideas. As the two photographers were based in different cities (Amsterdam and London), the project became a natural correspondence between them due to the global pandemic. For two years, Luke and Jaap became surreal pen pals, sharing body parts, building strange and wonderful creations.

There are a huge number of possible combinations, with 65,536 different characters.
