FILIGREE - Gertrudes Altschul
Although much admired in the country's photography scene, Gertrudes Altschul's work is still only known in specialist circles, having barely been published and exhibited.
Of Jewish origin, the artist emigrated in 1939 from her native Berlin to Brazil with her husband, fleeing the Nazi regime. She settled in São Paulo, where she divided her time between photography and the production of flowers for hats in a factory run by the couple. Gertrudes Altschul was one of the few women to belong to the renowned Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB) in São Paulo, an important group that brought together photographers in tune with modernist photography in Brazil. Her work seeks to break with the classical principles of composition in photography through geometric, abstract and figurative constructions, and to experiment with light, shadows, lines, rhythms, planes and the processes of developing and printing photographs.
