In 2019, Mario Testino photographed participants at the Kumbh Mela, a festival where Hindu devotees seek atonement. It is a purifying experience in which the elements of devotion and belonging are as tangible as any part of the material world. Testino captures the essence of the occasion by photographing those at the heart of the pilgrimage: the sadhus. In Holy Men, we encountered the sadhus as only Testino could present them: against a gray background, in close-up, and portrayed as individuals despite being part of something greater.
