INTIMATE DISTANCE II - Todd Hido
For over thirty years, Todd Hido has explored a world of blurred landscapes and desolate roads, of suburban cottages stalked by the dim beams of streetlamps, of women with mysterious expressions. By day, the houses are dark, cloistered spaces; by night, the rooms become incandescent. A new, revisited and expanded edition, Intimate Distance II features images taken by the artist in Iceland, Norway, France and Japan. Sequenced chronologically, the photographs reveal the depth and breadth of an eminently cinematic body of work, with images as magnetic as they are intriguing. In his introduction, David Campany notes that "if these photographs seem narrative, it's because they suggest untold stories and possible scenarios. Behind the curtains of the house, something may be happening, or nothing at all: from one room emanates the warm light of a bedside lamp, from another the cooler glow of a television screen. There's no drama here. Instead we have the drama of representation itself, and perhaps the drama of photography"; introduction by David Campany, text by Katya Tylevich.
