US - Arno Brignon
Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Lisbon, London, Dublin, Brussels, Luxembourg, Rome, Athens, Paris, Madrid. Contrary to what this list of capital cities might suggest, Arno Brignon did not embark on a meandering grand tour of Europe. Starting in 2018, he set off for the United States, mapping out a whimsical route that, in three stages, took him to twelve cities bearing the names of European capitals. Arno Brignon undertook this American journey in a unique way. Photography is a quintessentially solitary pursuit, but to preserve the cohesion of a family shaken by his repeated absences, he set off with Caroline and Joséphine, his partner and daughter. It wasn’t easy, especially when questioning the legitimacy of the journey and not always knowing whether he was in America on vacation or as a photographer. As he puts it so beautifully: “I have to learn to play along.” In this country where it is “difficult not to be caught up in the history of photography,” he has, by blending black-and-white and color, and by successfully bringing together family photographs and travel impressions, constructed a narrative as literary as it is cinematic—a story that recreates an experience as much as it invents a fictional America; text by Christian Caujolle, black-and-white and color photos.
