KITCHEN TABLE SERIES - Carrie Mae Weems
Kitchen Table Series is the first publication devoted exclusively to this important body of work by American artist Carrie Mae Weems. The 20 photographs and 14 text panels that make up Kitchen Table Series tell the story of one woman's life, in the intimate setting of her kitchen. The kitchen, one of the main spaces of domesticity and women's traditional domain, frames her story, revealing to us her relationships - with lovers, children, friends - and her own sense of self, in its varying projections of strength, vulnerability, alienation, tenderness and loneliness.
As Weems describes it, this artwork represents "the battle around family [...] monogamy [...] Weems herself is the protagonist of the series, though the woman she represents is an archetype. Kitchen Table Series seeks to reposition and reinvent the possibility of women and the possibility of people of color, and has to do with, in the artist's words "unrequested love".
Foreword by Sarah Lewis, essay by Adrienne Edwards
Published by Damiani, 2017
