KITCHEN TABLE SERIES - Carrie Mae Weems

*Kitchen Table Series* is the first publication devoted exclusively to this significant body of work by American artist Carrie Mae Weems. The 20 photographs and 14 text panels that make up *Kitchen Table Series* tell the story of a woman’s life within the intimate setting of her kitchen. The kitchen, one of the primary spaces of domesticity and the traditional domain of women, frames her story, revealing her relationships—with lovers, children, and friends—and her own sense of self, in her shifting projections of strength, vulnerability, alienation, tenderness, and solitude.

As Weems describes it, this artwork represents “the struggle surrounding the family […] monogamy […] Weems herself is the protagonist of the series, although the woman she portrays is an archetype. The Kitchen Table Series seeks to reposition and reinvent the possibilities for women and people of color, and is about, in the artist’s words, “unrequisitioned love.”

Foreword by Sarah Lewis, essay by Adrienne Edwards
