*Richard* is an artist’s book by photographer and video artist Manuel Wetscher. It brings together the previously unpublished photographic archives of his father, Richard Jenewein, which were discovered years after his death from AIDS. Since Richard’s illness had long been kept secret by the family, and the true cause of his death was not revealed to Manuel until ten years later, the book explores the evocative power of a distorted narrative.

Through a universal family photo album documenting Manuel’s childhood—surrounded by his sister and mother from the late 1980s to the early 1990s—the book also includes photographs taken during their travels to Australia, Spain, Greece, India, and Yugoslavia. Concluding the narrative with the death of the father, the book addresses the repercussions of a taboo and explores the poetic force of images, revealing their narrative and emotional power.
