LOVE BITES - Tim Richmond
Along this twenty-mile stretch of one of the world's longest coastal mudflats, Richmond's Love Bites meets those trying to find meaning and pleasure in small-town England. Beneath daily photographs of food banks, punks, pleasure arcades, swingers' clubs, shelters and newly-built houses, Richmond finds a fading malaise in its subjects: an apathetic microcosm of post-austerity, post-Brexit Britain. Love Bites allows these tensions to simmer to the surface: food poverty, isolation, commercial decline, housing insecurity, homelessness, unfulfilled desires and nostalgia mingle against the broad, overcast skies of the English Channel and its flat, sprawling coastline.
Following in a long line of British photographers who incorporate poetry and lyricism into social documentary projects, Richmond uses a delicate color palette and sympathetic lens to capture the everyday realities of isolation and longing in this corner of southwest England.
