LOVE SONGS, INTIMATE PHOTOGRAPHS
This group publication, which accompanies the exhibition presented at the MEP in 2022, explores the role of photography in understanding and representing love, physical intimacy, sexuality, and, by extension, the intimate. The book offers a fresh perspective on the history of photography through the lens of romantic relationships. Structured like the two sides of a record, Love Songs brings together the work of 16 artists who have placed their own intimacy at the center of their photographic practice.
Among the major photographic series are Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sentimental Journey (1969) and Winter Journey (1989–1990), which chronicle the beginning and end of his relationship with his wife Yoko, from their honeymoon to her death; as well as Nan Goldin’s masterpiece, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (since 1983), an exploratory and intimate journey through the New York underground of the time. Spanning the period from 1950 to 2021, the book combines iconic series with previously unpublished images never before seen in France. Love Songs reveals the unique relationship between photography and reality, and that indescribable thing called love. The director of the MEP, Simon Baker, has written the foreword; photos in black-and-white and color
