Martin Parr Looking at Books - Roger Eberhard
No one embodies the photo book market quite like Martin Parr. When Martin Parr, “the most influential figure in the world of photo books” (The Guardian), declares a book to be excellent, it sells out almost instantly. Most “collectors” rush to buy it without ever having seen it, not necessarily because they trust Martin Parr’s judgment, but because they can assume the book will increase in value. “Martin Parr looking at books” is a small satire on the photo book market, a sincere attempt to spark a discussion about the direction the photo book market is taking. Since it has become lucrative to collect the “good” books, it is no longer profitable to miss out on the “best” ones of the year.
The book consists of 22 found photographs of Martin Parr looking at books, most of which were taken at photo book festivals, where almost everyone watches him to see which book he might buy and promote later.
