ON CONTESTED TERRAIN - An-My Lê
Photographer An-My Lê (1960-) was a teenager when her family was evacuated from Vietnam aboard an American military plane in 1975. She began photography at Stanford University in California, and considers this artistic medium to be a "passport to the world". Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized in 2020 by Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art, "On Contested Terrain" is a photographic corpus compiling works already listed in some of her earlier publications (Smalll Wars, 29 Palms & Events Ashore) as well as never-before-seen photographeis. Drawing in part on memories of her own experiences of the Vietnam War, An-My Lê seeks to create a new understanding of this conflict, focusing in particular on the roles of non-combatants and re-enactment scenes. The book is accompanied by essays by Dan Leers and Lisa J. Sutcliffe, curators of the exhibition, as well as a dialogue between the artist and Vietnamese author Thanh Nguyen.
