ON CONTESTED TERRAIN - An-My Lê
Photographer An-My Lê (b. 1960) was a teenager when her family was evacuated from Vietnam aboard a U.S. military plane in 1975. She began studying photography at Stanford University in California and regards this artistic medium as a “passport to the world.” Published to coincide with an exhibition organized in 2020 by the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, “On Contested Terrain” is a photographic collection compiling works previously featured in some of her earlier publications (Small Wars, 29 Palms & Events Ashore) as well as never-before-seen photographs. Drawing in part on memories of her own experiences related to the Vietnam War, An-My Lê seeks to create a new understanding of this conflict by focusing in particular on the roles of non-combatants as well as scenes of reenactments. The book is accompanied by essays written by Dan Leers and Lisa J. Sutcliffe, curators of the exhibition, as well as a dialogue between the artist and Vietnamese author Thanh Nguyen.
