OUTSKIRTS - Todd Hido
“Todd Hido finds poetry in this strangeness, which consists of all the implied but unspoken material on the fringes of thrillers. It lurks in the high-voltage wires, the high-intensity lights, the leafless trees and ambitious weeds, the hurricane fences and knee-high concrete walls, the night sky reddened by light pollution. If in these images it is always midnight and you are always stranded and chilled and at a loss, you must always pay attention to the way the prowler’s footprints hover in the snow around the window. The mix of cars around the bungalow may mean that many adults live there, but it may mean something you don’t really want to know. These images could represent views from the undercover surveillance car, if the driver drinking endless coffee while waiting for someone to leave or arrive were able to appreciate the scene. The silence that permeates these images is either before or after the fact, or the result of the stifling effects of the weather, or else it is permanent, even deadly.” — Excerpt from the introduction by Luc Sante
