REALITIES - Jan Saudek
Over the course of a career spanning more than 30 years, Czech photographer Jan Saudek (b. 1935) has consistently engaged with the political realities of his homeland and has been regarded as a nonconformist artist. He has immersed himself in a dreamlike world where eroticism and aesthetics converge in a deeply personal photographic style. Drawing on 19th-century pornographic studio photography, classical painting, and historical portraiture, Saudek’s nudes and erotic images reveal a world of fantasy, where artistic play and expression are unhindered by any notion of “reality.” As Jan Saudek has often stated, “I am not capable of depicting the lives of others. I depict my own.” Numerous previously unseen and unpublished images are featured in this retrospective, along with some of the artist’s earliest photographs.
