REALITIES - Jan Saudek
In a career spanning more than 30 years, Czech photographer Jan Saudek (1935-) has always taken into account the political realities of his native country, and has been regarded as an anti-conformist artist. He immersed himself in a dreamlike universe, where eroticism and aesthetics combine in a deeply personal photographic style. Based on nineteenth-century pornographic studio photography, classical painting and historical portraiture, Saudek's nudes and erotic images reveal a world of fantasy, where artistic play and expression are unfettered by any notion of "reality". As Jan Saudek has often said, "I don't have the ability to represent other people's lives. I represent my own. This retrospective showcases many previously unseen and unpublished images, as well as some of the artist's earliest photographs.
