STUDIO - Paolo Roversi
Paolo Roversi is internationally renowned for his romantic, intense and ethereal images and fashion portraits, photographs that quiver on the edge of their seemingly fragile existence. A typical Roversi image appears as if captured in the process of becoming-it develops on the page before our eyes or, depending on perspective, it might simply disappear into the ether. Since 1980, Roversi has worked mainly with 8" x 10" Polaroids, and rarely on location. Studio is a milestone in his burgeoning bibliography. Conceived as a series of 60 gatefolds, at first glance the book appears to be a collection of empty pages. The viewing experience is akin to that of peeling back a Polaroid sheet, of the darkness of an image that magically reveals itself. In images representing nearly two decades of work, the collection offers a self-portrait of the artist and a window onto the place where he creates his art. These photographs are a mixture of the published and the highly personal, but all have the intimacy engendered by the place where Roversi feels most at home; photos in color.
