THE CHINESE PHOTOBOOK, FROM THE 1900s TO PRESENT - Martin Parr & Wassink Lundgren
In recent years, the history of photography has been marked by a major reassessment of the role and status of the photobook. This book is based on a collection of Chinese photobooks compiled by Martin Parr and the Dutch photography team Wassink Lundgren (consisting of Thijs Groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren) based in Beijing and London. And while the collection was initially inspired by Parr's interest in propaganda books and in finding major works of socialist realist photography from the early days of the Communist Party and the Cultural Revolution, the book selection also includes important books published as early as 1900, as well as contemporary volumes by emerging Chinese photographers. Each photobook offers a new visual perspective on China's complicated history from the twentieth century onwards. The Chinese Photobook also includes accompanying texts and descriptions of individual titles by Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Ruben Lundgren, Stephanie H. Tung and Gerry Badger.
