A true master of the modern portrait, Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra’s (b. 1959) large-scale photographs and videos are brilliant explorations of identity, vulnerability, and dignity. She is one of the most prominent and internationally recognized artists in the fields of photography and video portraiture. Her large-scale photographs display a rare sense of humanity, empathy, and intimacy without a trace of sentimentality or intrusiveness. She typically captures her subjects in moments of transition or vulnerability, thereby focusing on themes of identity. Although thoroughly modern, even timeless, her portraiture evokes the great masters of the Golden Age of Dutch art.
