The Oldest Thing - Ruth van Beek
In her work, which has its origins in her ever-growing archives, Ruth van Beek often uses the established visual codes of photography. Images, mainly from old books, become her tools, raw material and context. Van Beek physically intervenes in the images - by folding them, cutting them up or adding pieces of wallpaper - rearranging and manipulating the image long enough to reveal the universe within.
The Oldest Thing features numerous collages, archival images and paintings in a dazzling exhibition of some 250 double-page spreads, in which his mother's kitchen also plays a role.
Seven poems by Van Beek's long-time friend Basje Boer add nuance to the whole.
