THE OLDEST THING - Ruth Van Beek
In her work, which originates from her ever-growing archives, Ruth van Beek often uses established visual codes from photography. The images, mainly sourced from old books, become her tools, her raw material, and her context. Van Beek physically intervenes in the images—folding them, cutting them up, or adding pieces of wallpaper—rearranging and manipulating the image long enough to reveal the universe it contains.
The Oldest Thing features numerous collages, archival images, and paintings in a dazzling exhibition of approximately 250 double-page spreads in which his mother's cooking also plays a role.
Seven poems by Basje Boer, a longtime friend of Van Beek, add nuance to the collection.
