The One-Man Water Cannon Test - Eric Bachmann
Following several violent clashes between youths and the municipal police in Switzerland's largest city in the summer of 1968, the city council, in consultation with the State Council, decided to purchase four modern water cannons, two for the municipal police and two for the cantonal police. In so doing, however, the city council exceeded its powers and bypassed the town council. In the already tense political climate, the purchase immediately turned into a scandal and became the subject of controversy in the media. In the spring of 1969, journalists Robert Naef and Peter Fasler from the popular magazine Sie und Er wanted to capitalize on readers' great interest in the story. Together with photographer Eric Bachmann, the two reporters went to the Wädenswil cantonal police station and stood directly in the line of fire of the water cannon, thus producing the impressive photographs in this book, which are now being made public in their entirety for the first time. The one-man water cannon test contains unique period documents that provide an unprecedented insight into the heated political atmosphere in Zurich in the late 1960s.
