Published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam from January 20 to May 6, 2018.

Unwired brings together two concurrent projects by Dutch photographer Jacqueline Hassink (b. 1966), which sharpen our awareness of an increasingly digitally connected world. In remote landscapes, she has sought out places where cell service is unavailable—where there is, so to speak, complete radio silence—such as the Japanese island of Yakushima, the Norwegian territory of Svalbard, known as Spitsbergen, or Iceland’s uninhabitable volcanic desert are captured by her lens, as are artificially created dead zones in urban spaces, such as the Digital Detox Hotel in Baden-Baden.

At first glance, her second project, iPortrait, appears to be the exact opposite of her first. In this project, Jacqueline Hassink portrays people engrossed in their smartphones on subways in major cities such as New York, Paris, London, Moscow, Shanghai, Seoul, and Tokyo. Here, she reveals the other side of digital networking, which interferes with direct human contact; contributions by Bregtje Van der Haak, Achille Mbembe, and Evgeny Morozov; texts by Frits Gierstberg, Jacqueline Hassink, and Yudo Harada; color photographs.

Published by Hatje Cantz to coincide with the exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam from January 20 to May 6, 2018.

Texts by Frits Gierstberg, Jacqueline Hassink, and Yudo Harada
