Collected during wanderings across the web, the photographs in the What the Fuck! series come from all over the world. Part personal cabinet of curiosities, part documentary collection, What the Final Fuck! offers, like its predecessors, a contemporary take on amateur photography and explores both the place, function, and sharing of today’s vernacular photography as well as the new social relationships it illustrates. On the social media platforms and websites where these photographs originate, the acronym WTF often precedes content to signify the shock it provokes. This interjection expresses both the “voyeur’s” incomprehension and discomfort in the face of these images. Their accumulation underscores the frantic race to share “extraordinary” content for a desensitized audience and raises the question of the dilution of meaning.
