"I like to pick and choose! Strolling through selected bookshops that line my Parisian strolls. I sometimes go to book fairs, but the abundance of publications quickly turns me off. There are, of course, the documentation books for the work I do with fashion and beauty brands, and then there are the others, all the others! The photographic content is essential, but there's also the object: in other words, the volume, the paper, the cover, the layout too. All these elements are inseparable in my choice. Too many books don't meet these criteria. I like surprises, and sometimes the themes are far removed from my current preoccupations, but who cares!
Here's my eclectic selection, ranging from a journey into icy lands, an Indian photographer's tribute to his father, the diary of a young American girl who just wants to surf, or a nostalgic look at a childhood in the Ukraine, and many others that will enrich this new kind of bookshop over the weeks. And I love UFOs! These unidentified books that push the limits of publishing and the visual, like this book on food trials for American soldiers, this photographer crazy about petunias, or the experiments of Ron Jude or Roe Ethridge, or even the stream of images by Japanese master Kikuji Kawada, not forgetting the diary of a stylist locked in her Brooklyn home during the lockdown. Patrick Remy
Photographic critic, independent editor and art director, Patrick Remy has curated numerous exhibitions devoted to fashion photography, notably in Kobe and Melbourne. In 1999, he created Patrick Remy Studio, specialized in consulting and iconographic research for luxury houses and advertising agencies. He also collaborates with numerous publishing houses such as Steidl, Prestel, Rizzoli New York, Louis Vuitton and Taschen.
To this date, he has published more than sixty books, including monographs on Hiromix, Steve Hiett, Massimo Vitali, Max Pam, Saul Leiter, Helmut Newton, Wing Shya, Kourtney Roy, Gerard Malanga, Jonas Mekas, Guido Mocafico, Thibaut Cuisset, Quentin de Briey, Kishin Shinoyama, Marchand et Meffre, Valérie Belin, Jeanloup Sieff, Thomas Hauser, Hanna Moon, Jeff Burton and Daidō Moriyama, to name a few. He also is the author of several books, including Antiglossy : Fashion Photography Now (Rizzoli New York, 2019).
L'INAPERÇU is honored to count Patrick Remy among its very first contributors, on the occasion of our first photobook curation. From January 10, 2023, we will propose a new selection of photobooks, all carefully selected by Patrick Remy, in addition to a rich cultural program parallel to the development of our activity as a bookstore specialized in artists' photobooks.
