#2 CURATED BY VALÉRIE BELIN: WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS

MARCH 28 TO MAY 28

In response to L’INAPERÇU invitation, I chose the theme of women photographers not as a subject in and of itself, but because I thought it was an opportunity to showcase the diversity and quality of the work produced by artists who, like me, are both women and photographers. As a great lover of photography books myself, I approached this project as an opportunity to take stock of my own library, an inventory to which I’ve added references I consider essential. My selection consists mainly of photography books, primarily monographs. So I simply invite you to share the books I love and that inspire my work.”

About Valérie Belin :

Valérie Belin is a French visual artist, born in 1964 in Boulogne-Billancourt. She lives and works in Paris. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts de Versailles (1983–1985), then at the École nationale supérieure d’art de Bourges (1985–1988), she earned her national higher diploma in visual arts in 1988. She also holds a degree in the philosophy of art (University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne, 1898). Initially influenced by various minimalist and conceptual movements, Valérie Belin became interested in the medium of photography, which serves as both the subject of her work and her means of reflection and creation. Light, matter, and the physicality of objects and beings in general, as well as their transformations and representations, form the ground for her experiments and the universe of her artistic discourse. Her work takes the form of photographic series, each created as part of a project.

Valérie Belin’s works have been exhibited worldwide and are part of numerous public and private collections. Winner of the Pictet Prize in 2015 (Disorder), Valérie Belin was named an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2017. That same year, a solo exhibition was co-produced by the Three Shadows Photography Art Center in Beijing, the SCAP in Shanghai, and the Chengdu Museum. In 2019, Valérie Belin exhibited a new series at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

She is represented by Galerie Nathalie Obadia (Paris, Brussels), Galerie Edwynn Houk in New York and Galerie Huxley-Parlour in London.
