A1 - THE GREAT NORTH ROAD - Paul Graham
A1 - The Great North Road is Paul Graham's first book, published in 1983. Despite the vitality of the British photography scene at the time, there were only a handful of monographic books - Chris Killip and Martin Parr each had one - and no dedicated publisher or distributor. Graham had to self-publish A1, but as the first book in color, it had a surprising impact on British photography. Combining the tradition of social documentary with a fresh approach to color, A1 - The Great North Road transformed photography in the UK and paved the way for the emergence of a new generation of British color photographers, from Nick Waplington and Anna Fox to Richard Billingham and Tom Wood.
Traveling the length and breadth of England as far as Edinburgh, Graham took a large-format camera along the Great North Road, recording the people, buildings and landscapes of early 1980s Britain. Now in its 40th year, this book is as much a work of art as it is a historical document of the years of Margaret Thatcher's government and the decline of the UK's industrial base.
