A1 - *The Great North Road* is Paul Graham’s first book, published in 1983. Despite the vitality of the British photography scene at the time, there were only a handful of monographic books—Chris Killip and Martin Parr each had one—and no established publisher or distributor. Graham had to self-publish A1, but as the first book in color, it had a surprising impact on British photography. Combining the tradition of social documentary with a new approach to color, A1 - The Great North Road transformed photography in the United Kingdom and paved the way for the emergence of a new generation of British color photographers, from Nick Waplington to Anna Fox, including Richard Billingham and Tom Wood.

Traveling across England all the way to Edinburgh, Graham made several trips along the “Great North Road” with a large-format camera to document the people, buildings, and landscapes of Britain in the early 1980s. Now 40 years old, this book is as much a work of art as it is a historical document of the years of Margaret Thatcher’s government and the decline of the United Kingdom’s industrial base.
