I'M COM'UN HOME IN THE MORN'UN
Elaine Constantine's photographs of the 1990s northern soul scene are the subject of a new book, published by RRB Photobooks, and an exhibition at the Martin Parr Foundation. The photographs, many of which are presented here for the first time, were taken in places such as Manchester's Ritz and London's 100 Club, as well as in more modest settings such as a certain Steve's kitchen.
In the early 1990s, Constantine had just moved from Manchester to London for her photography career, and had been commissioned to photograph nightclubs for The Face magazine. She was asked to shoot at the 100 Club, where 60s and 70s American soul (northern soul) 45s were played throughout the night. Constantine herself had frequented the northern soul scene a few years earlier and was curious to see how it had evolved.
