From the vast archives of photojournalist Pasquale Bove, which contain over 250,000 images, Luca Santese selected 306 photographs taken between 1985 and 2000 as the conceptual cornerstones of *Italy&Italy*. Following precise selection criteria, Santese set out to create and organically articulate the iconography of those years from Bove’s archives, starting with a single fragment: the daily and social life of the city of Rimini and its surroundings. In the 1980s and 1990s, Rimini embodied what might be defined as “Italianness”; in Rimini, everyone felt at home, from politicians enjoying themselves in the many nightclubs to the thousands of working-class people who flocked from cities across the country to this vacation destination.
Bove photographed and cataloged hundreds of situations and environments radically different from one another, free from any political or social distinction. The result is a project that conveys a range of emotions, atmospheres, memories, joys, and sorrows.
