Kavi began photographing Leicester's Golden Mile district to reconnect with the city, its people and his own past after living in London for 30 years.
This Golden Mile is not the one-kilometer stretch of Melton Road that turns into Belgrave Road, with its sari shops, Indian restaurants, and jewelry stores. It is the arteries and veins that branch off from it and breathe life into the parts of the neighborhood located away from the central commercial thoroughfare. This Golden Mile exists in the poetry of houses, temples, and street corners; it lies in the alleys and in the gaps between steel fences leading to dilapidated industrial lots. This Golden Mile is both an entry point and an exit point, the final kilometer of a long journey to Britain.
